Colored popcorn is great all the time. There are several different ways to color popcorn. One of the most popular and definitely the most flavorful ways is to make candied or caramel popcorn. When most people color them, they use a flavored caramel so that pink might stand for strawberry or watermelon and yellow will taste like banana. This is great because not only will you end up with a bunch of different colors, but there will be a variety of tastes.
Now, again, flavored/caramel popcorn is not the only way to color popcorn. I have read that you can color popcorn by soaking it in food coloring for 20 minutes to a half an hour, but i have never tried this. However, it is possible to color popcorn as several companies have come out with colored popcorn that tastes just like normal popcorn, and is very much normal popcorn except for the fact that it is another color. One thing you will have to watch out for is the naturally colored kernels. That is to say the kernels of popcorn that simply grow another color. Most of the time they will pop and will be a yellow or white color.
While you are making colored popcorn, you might as well go all out and make colored popcorn balls. My favorite way to make colored popcorn balls it to have the ball already made and then have the colored and flavored caramels put on the outer layer. This makes a very beautiful popcorn ball. It will be nice and shiny, much like a bulb for a christmas tree. In addition to that it is flavored, and for people who normally have buttered popcorn, this is great. Not many people like to have the same ordinary thing in different shapes, therefore adding flavor can make it especially appealing. The only draw back is that a little white might show through because it is very hard to cover every square inch of a popcorn ball with caramel. If you have colored kernals the whole ball will be one color the whole way through.
